Week 4 Graphics Graphics and More Graphics

Consider the graphics in the ever popular minecraft ? How important are they to the gameplay and player experience ?

in minecraft the developers went for a more customisable world over a graphically stunning one. as the emphasis is more on game play and building things it doesn't really need to look great. the game is doing well because it is different to most games around at the moment, it is about being creative and building your own things, i think this is what makes it so popular. where as most games today rely on high end graphics and media hype to sell them.

Would you come to the same conclusion about a title such as FIFA 2013 or F1 2013?

i wouldn't come to to the same conclusion because where as minecraft is purely for fun, F1 and FIFA are simulations and need to be realistic and visually good looking as they are trying to replicate real life sports. it is trying to immerse the player in the action and make them feel like they are there.

Unit 36 GP+T

will graphics continue to be the driving force for mass market sales?

this question doesn't have a definitive yes or no answer it really depends on genre of game and the platform.  a good example of graphics creating mass market sales are the next gen consoles, the reason most people will buy them is for the jump in graphic quality.
however graphics aren't always the main reason a game sells well. a good example of this is mine craft, this game is more about customisation and creation the graphics aren't particularly spectacular but it is an extremely popular game. gameplay is also a huge factor in sales if a game is fun to play but lacks graphical quality it can still sell well

donkey Kong

donkey Kong is a retro video game released on July 9, 1981

having played donkey Kong  I have come to the conclusion that the gameplay is a lot more challenging than modern games and a lot more addictive as it challenges you to get a higher score.

you can play it here:  http://www.freekong.org/
